What is the process of a hair transplant?
The process begins with a consultation from our providers; they then will determine the best course of action and begin the transplant. It starts with the surgeon cleaning your scalp and injecting medicine to numb the back of your head so you are comfortable. Depending on the course of action, the doctor will do one of two methods:
● Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
● Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
In the FUT method, a strip of scalp is cut from the back of the head by a donor. The hair follicles are then harvested from the strip then individually transplanted to the recipient areas. The FUT method is the preferred method because it allows the surgeon to fully utilize the scalp area. FUT generally allows for a greater number of grafts to be transplanted in a single session.
The FUE method is different from the FUT method as there is no strip of tissue taken from the donor’s head. Instead, each follicular unit is individually taken from the scalp.
Is the hair transplant procedure painful?
The medical team will try to make you as comfortable as possible, but due to swelling there may be some pain/discomfort during the recovery period. Pain medicine can be prescribed if needed.
What is the recovery like?
Both methods of the hair transplant procedure are relatively simple. The procedures are done on an outpatient basis, which means that some patients can return back to work and/or to their home country as soon as the very next day.
Will there be scars?
With the FUT method, there is usually a small, very narrow, linear scar on the back of the head (usually only 1mm in diameter or less). The scar can be easily concealed by different styles of haircuts. The scar will become less noticeable over time, as the scar will fade.
